canyon, yosemite, but also stewarding america's history and that would include independence hall, gettysburg, mount rush more, and most recently flight 93. my dress uniform and that famous hat is really derived from the world war i uniform from 1916, little changed from that time. the first rangers that patroled our parks before there was a park service were calvary soldiers. the presidio here in san francisco sent buffalo soldiers up to yosemite and sequoia every summer to control the parks, to keep the poachers out and to begin the construction of roads. the first federal superintendent of sequoia national park was colonel charles young. he happened to be the third african-american to graduate from west point. he went on to become the first black colonel in the army. amazing story. i believe he'll be honored sometime later this year by some sort of a national monument at his home in ohio. so, pretty interesting fellow and pretty amazing leadership demonstrated. today our rangers across the country perform modern-day public services, often away from municipalities. so, we're the

in curry village at yosemite national park where the hantavirus outbreak started in the summer. >> 10 people got sick from the hantavirus. three eventually died. park officials decided to demolish some of the tent cabins where it's believed the victims were infected by the disease. park officials began demolishing 91 of the 400 on the ground there. during the summer, the park closed nearly 100 of them and sent crews in to sanitize and deep-clean the tents. workers sealed all gaps and tightened the vinyl-coated van vas over the double-plywood walls to keep the dear mice out. but people kept getting sick. that's why the park decided to get rid of the tents. the virus is spread through the air and attacks a person's lungs and causes flu-like symptoms. >>> the rain clouds are rolling in over the bay area, and so are the high winds! this is a view of the golden get bridge. strong winds delayed flights at sfo for a few houring during the evening -- hours during the evening. >> up in the north bay we've been seeing the rain kind of stall up there. but it's going to move all the way down sou

into the valley. high country should be dry about 38 degrees in lake tahoe. 44 degrees in yosemite. winter storm warnings going up there though tonight as we're expecting a pretty fair storm as to to head in. a slow-moving storm system, this may be a little bit quick here as it tries to move the rain in toward the afternoon but you get the idea tomorrow morning, that whole cold front lingers over the bay area. so we're looking at some pretty good rainfall and some strong gusty winds, maybe gusting to over 50 miles an hour out near the coastline and over the mountaintops. temperatures for today not bad. 57 degrees in san jose. it should be dry. 58 in mountain view. 56 in hayward. east bay numbers up into the 50s and you will see those 50s inside the bay. so look out over the next couple of days today probably the last real dry day although some showers could develop in the afternoon. rain expected on friday. more rain on saturday. more showers continuing on sunday. wow! the only dry day maybe in the next 7 probably christmas. how about that! >> i know. look at that when no one is commuting. righ

just on highway 50 now. otherwise yosemite cold 37 degrees there. and fog reported in sacramento with highs in the low 50s. our temperatures closer to home similar to yesterday. low to mid-50s, not much higher than that. 53 in santa clara. checking some east bay numbers, 50 degrees out in brentwood, antioch and 53 in walnut creek and pleasant hill. around the bay it's going to be slightly warmer, berkeley, alameda, coming close to the mid-50s. 54 there and 52 out in mill valley. so here's a check of the forecast. over the next several days, thursday today you will notice drying out and then friday afternoon, that's when the rain showers return. it remains unsettled through saturday and then for now it actually looks dry sunday through new year's day. then another chance of rain returning for wednesday. >>> want to update you on a couple of traffic notes including this earlier problem in los gatos. first towards the bay bridge, where -- well, here's that problem in los gatos. northbound 17 at santa cruz avenue that accident is now clear. that's the good news. otherwise, we still h
